Some if the history of the U.S. 8th infantry division.
WW1
The U.S. 8th infantry division was activated early in 1918 at the tail end of WW1, however no engagements were fought by the U.S. 8th infantry division during the great war.
WW2
After being reactivated in July 1940 the United States 8th infantry division saw extensive action after D-Day. The division's troops left their Irish training base for the Utah beach landing grounds (which were by now firmly held by the allied forces) in Normandy early in July 1944. Contact with the Germans came shortly after on the 7th July. The division was one of the many sluging it out with the retreating but battle hardened German army through the highly defensable French countryside and network of towns. Action was seen in Brest & Rennes amongst other French settlements until the 8th division marched into Luxembourg
By around March of 1945 the 8th infantry had reached the Rhine, here it held up until ordered to launch an attack in support of other forces against the Germans caught in the 'Ruhr Pocket'
After V.E. day the division was stationed in the then West Germany until deactivation in the early 1990s after the effective collapse of the Soviet Union.
