Some terminology for binoculars;
When describing a pair of binoculars as 8x40 the first number describes the magnification of the instrument while the second figure describes the objective lens diameter.
Objective lens size is important because it determines the light gathering ability of the binoculars. A larger objective lens can gather more light than a small one and will thus produce a brighter image. It will also be of greater use therfore in low light conditions.
The magnification number simply describes how much closer you are going to feel to whatever you are observing. Beware binoculars with high magnification and small objective lenses as these will produce a dim image and be of little use in low light conditions.
Zoom binoculars have an additional lever which allows the observer to vary the magnification of the instrument. This is a separate control to the focus wheel. In action these are great fun to use, you can zoom out to a wider angle and then focus in on anything that warrants closer inspection.
All quality modern binoculars have coated optics which enhance the instrument's light gathering efficiency.
